Space Goat vol.1

Sat Mar 21, 2015, 12:14 PM
  • Mood: Artistic

Welcome to the very first issue of the monthly Space Goat! This months theme is "First & Final". We'll also have a look at some great Space Art. The name of this journal comes from a wonderful deviation by Paivatar:

Head over to her deviation to find out why this goat decided to be an astronaut.

Cataclysm by sirgerg

Greg Martin (sirgerg) was the first space artist I encountered on DeviantArt and his artwork just blew me away. This was exactly what I wanted to create! He ist still one of the greatest inspirations of the Space Art genre. Digital space art would not be the same without him. Today he mostly does excellent photography but I got a feeling, we haven't seen the last of his marvelous illustrations.

The Final Frontier

We have all heard it before: Space - the final frontier. But where does it come frome and what does it mean?
Frontier is such an American word, you can't even translate it perfectly into other languages. The Frontier is the land that is not yet settled. It is the west that needs to be conquered. For centuries the American culture thrived on the idea of expanding into the west. This was achieved by technolgy, for example the railroad, telegraphs and dynamite.
But then, in 1890 the frontier was officially settled. So where to go now? Two world wars and a major crisis did not leave much time to worry. But after WW2 thoughts about the frontier came back. In 1960 John F Kennedy was talking about space as the new frontier. We were going to conquer space just as we did with the American continent! But space turned out to be a harsh mistress. We step we took there was hard earned int progress is much slower than we anticipated in the sixties. But we still got the space of science fiction! That space is easy to settle with technology, building faster than light space ships isn't any harder than building a train! Let's all get onboard, this is going to be a wagon trek to the stars! And so, the final frontier isn't the real space anymore, it is the science fiction space.

Tutorial of the month

To keep the theme of this first issue: If you want to get started with space art, you've got to have a look at this wonderful tutorial by MariaSemelevich
How to Composite Your Own Space Scene by MariaSemelevich
She really covers everything from beginning to end. If you follow the tutorial you will have created your very own space scene and know the basics of essential part.

Well, that was it for March, I really hope you've enjoyed reading it half as much as I enjoyed writing and see you again in April! There are still loads of topics and art to cover.

I'm trying to do a monthly space art journal. If you want your art to be featured, just leave a thumbnail in the comments. I can't promise anything, but I'll try!

A little experiment. Quite pleased, might start to work on that one.

People call me Captain 'Awesome' McDirty. No, they don't but wouldn't that be great? I am a professional artist, doing 3d animation, visual effects and post production. You can visit me at my personal portfolio website or at my blog Here on DA I do mostly space art, a hobby of mine I have pursued for eleven years now. Also I love sharing my resources here. My stock gallery keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Currently I am working on my Opus Magnum, a multimedia story with the unimaginative working title "Red Sorceress". It is fantasy and it is science fiction. It's part book(s), part animation, still images and maybe one day a movie? I'm still working on the world building and the characters, but it is already on a good way. Also I'm always looking for artists who wanna join my project. I know it's kind of vague at the moment but if you want more information, just drop me a note.
